Yes, I agree. I also really like direct feedback of Jupyter Notebook. But it comes with the disadvantage that it is difficult to add more code in the notebook without breaking the entire code in the notebook.

Small test functions should do the work. Also, you could isolate the code from the data, which makes it easier to create the function that do what you want.
